Worlds Apart, Serving Together

Working among the Poor in Romania

Romania, a former communist country, is located east of Hungary, south and west of Ukraine, and north of Turkey. In January 2007, Romania will enter the European Union. Here are some stats on Romania:
  • Land size: about the size of Oregon
  • Population: 22 million
  • Life expectancy: 72 years
  • 23% of population is under 18 years old
  • 55% live in urban areas
  • 97% literate
  • 15% live below the poverty line
  • 93% are Orthodox/Catholic
  • 3.5% are evangelical

Iasi(pronounced "Yosh") has a population of 338,000 and is located several hours by train directly NE of Bucharest.

Although during most communist regimes, religion of all kinds was obliterated, in Romania the Orthodox Church was allowed to flourish. As a result, this coupling of Church and State continues as a religious and political stronghold. Icon worship, paying priests for prayers, veneration of holy remains, and the earning of merit through religious acts characterizes Orthodox worship. Such acts are required, generating fear if neglected. None are assured of salvation.

InnerChange in Romania exists to make Christian disciples among the poor by building redemptive empowering relationships and developing indigenous leaders who do the same. (2 Timothy 2:2)

Orphans and Children at Risk

Considering that 75% of all pregancies are terminated in abortion, (the highest rate in the world), this seems to indicate a low value for life and children. For the remaining 25% that are allowed to go to term, roughly 10,000 are abandoned in hospitals each year. During 2004, up to 50,000 children were in State institutions, with only 2,242 being released upon arriving at 18 years of age. (Source:UNICEF)
