Worlds Apart, Serving Together

AIDS - the next Killing Fields

  • 2.6% of general population is HIV positive
  • 25 new HIV infections per day
  • "AIDS will be the next Killing Fields," said Hun Sen, First Prime Minister of Cambodia

The following pictures are representative of the typical Cambodian population, but don't imply infection.
The population experiencing the fastest growing number of AIDS cases are married women.

When their husbands are infected, they in turn infect their wives.
The next child born is also often HIV positive.

Once the HIV becomes active, it usually runs its course in three months, since medicines are not available to combat the various infections.
With no nursing staff, the family is expected to care for the patient, including meal preparation, hygene, and other physical needs.
Since no one is working to earn a living, the family then ends up destitute.

  • Only 8500 hospital beds nationally for 11.7 million people.
  • By 2006 there will be an estimated 40,000 AIDS-related orphans added to an already under-resourced orphanage system.
Funeral procession for those with resources.
Cremeation costs money. Since the husband's illness depletes any available resources, if and when the wife gets sick, there are no resources left to help her with meals or other physical needs.
